Mark SmithThe United Kingdom has produced some fine engineers and inventors, some that you may or may not have heard of. However, their inventions you certainly must have. Some of these greats are also noticeably famous for other reasons over engineering.
Neil Armstrong, of course, the first man to step foot onto the moon took the first steps of his career in gaining degrees in engineering which eventually led him to become an astronaut. Impressively, Armstrong gained a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from USC.
Another surprising name is Hedy Lamarr, the 1940’s sultry actress. The actor did not have a formal degree in engineering however she did invent the anti-jamming device which was used against the Nazi radars in the Second World War.
Rowan Atkinson is one of the most peculiar ones on the list, the Geordie actor best known as Mr Bean also studied at Manchester and Oxford University where he was a student in electrical engineering.
Thomas Edison, a name you may have expected on this list, created the light bulb among other inventions including the phonograph and the kinetoscope.
Leonardo Da Vinci, of course know for the famous Da Vinci art however the man was an engineering revolutionary. Many of his drawings for inventions were not actually realized until centuries later. In fact, one of his schematics was for a flying machine that worked very similarly to a modern day helicopter.
Alexander Graham Bell, one of the most famous inventors of all time. Most famous for inventing the telephone, Bell also worked in medical research and taught techniques to help the death to speak.
Henry Ford is another engineering legend who of course founded the Ford Motor Company. Ford’s biggest achievement was creating the factory assembly approach to building cars.
Yasser Arafat has a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Cairo and is of course the leader of Palestine. Arafat also worked with Israel for the Oslo Accord and struck a shaky peace agreement between the two countries.
Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock attended London County Council School of Engineering and Navigation and began his career as an engineer. Despite Hitchcock being best known for his involvement in the film industry, he started off studying engineering in the capital and went on to gain his first job role as a draftsman and advertising designer shortly after graduating.
